Teachers/ Trainers/ Facilitators
Please read
From September 2007, all new entrants to teaching/training/facilitating in the lifelong learning/adult sector are required to complete a new award which will prepare them to teach. to teach.
The guidance available on this is a bit hazy so we are not entirely clear how much of all this applies to our sector as of now but we wanted all Cumbria Learning Links members to be aware of the new requirement - there is certainly a clear drive towards a better qualified teacher/training workforce across all sectors by 2010.
Further information can be found at www.lluk.org or www.ifl.ac.uk
At present, there does not seem to be a requirement for people already working in the sector who are "unqualified" - however this is likely to come. It is unclear about currency for previously achieved qualifications. It is also worth emphasising that at present this only applies to people teaching/tutoring courses funded by public money ie LSC, Cumbria County Council etc.
I would urge any of you delivering training to consider whether any of this applies to you and if you need to act to get your teachers/tutors suitably qualified.

Understanding Management -
Openings Programme with The Open University
Most of us, at one time or another, encounter management. It is one of the dominant features of modern working life. Sometimes our experience is one of being managed and at other times we are required to manage, whether we have a formal title or not. But........
* Have you ever wondered what ‘management’ really
means?
* What kinds of ideas and activities make up ‘management’?
* What or who makes a good manager? Or a bad one?
* And how can you get involved and manage better?
This course will help you make sense of management and answer some of these questions for yourself.
This as offered at Introductory Level (University Level 1) and it is an online course costing £99.
Visit www3.open.ac.uk/courses for further details
LSC Contracting
Have you had LSC contracts in the past?
Are you delivering training which meets the targets
of the LSC?
We want to gather information on all voluntary sector providers out there who could support achievement of targets by delivering what they do best, but perhaps don’t have the capacity or numbers to support LSC funding requirements. Cumbria Learning Links could broker a county-wide contract to secure funding and ensure delivery continues.
Contact Kitty on 01768 242138 for further discussions.
To see a copy of the LSC regional commissioning plan – giving their priorities for the North West – see www.lsc.gov.uk and follow through to North West.
Supporting Performance Action Learning Sets
The Performance Hub and Action Learning Matters are planning to run five more action learning sets across England. Sets will meet once a month, over five months. They are designed for development workers who want to discuss issues relating to supporting groups improve their performance, such as
- How can we reach smaller groups who don’t feel quality assurance is important?
- Benchmarking is becoming a buzz word – what does it mean?
- What type of service should I develop to benefit my groups?
Sets will run where there is demand. Currently there is 1 member in the North West waiting to join a set. As soon as we have five set members in one region, we will start one.
Cost – £250 per person

Online Supporting Performance
Action Learning Sets
“A supportive and effective environment in which to explore behaviours and traits which are limiting my and my organisation’s development. A chance to meet interesting people, learn about myself and others, and have fun!”
Quote from current Supporting Performance ALS member (London)
The Performance Hub and Action Learning Matters are currently looking for three more people to try out e-action learning in an experimental pilot set this summer. It will follow the same principles of above ‘traditional’ action learning sets, but will be a chance to share learning about performance improvement initiatives online.
Cost: special price for pilot – only £40 per person.
